The Clusters of Excellence established at selected German universities are internationally recognized, competitive research institutions which make it possible for scientists to conduct research and collaborate in an inspiring setting. They also provide excellent support and career opportunities for junior researchers.
Within the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments, the German Research Foundation (DFG) and German Council of Science and Humanities ("Wissenschaftsrat") called for proposals for Clusters of Excellence in the second Funding Line.
Clusters of Excellence are internationally visible and competitive research and educational institutions that conduct top-level research, thus enabling scientific networking and interdisciplinary collaboration. They are an important element of the strategic plan of the University with the goal to substantially sharpen its profile.
A total of 37 Clusters with an average of 6.5 million Euros a year each are being funded within the Excellence Initiative, among them currently two at RWTH Aachen University.
